arete Australia successfully delivered the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) International Upgrade, a landmark project that modernises one of Melbourne’s most iconic cultural buildings while respecting its rich architectural heritage. The works prepare the gallery for its next chapter, enabling the future development of the neighbouring The Fox: NGV Contemporary and revitalising key spaces no longer suited to the evolving needs of the precinct.

Working closely with Development Victoria, Arete reimagined and repurposed several areas throughout the heritage-listed NGV International building. The project involved a new goods loading dock, upgraded security and back-of-house facilities, a new member’s lounge entry, modern conservation and restoration spaces, and high-end staff amenities across multiple levels.

Particular care was taken to protect the gallery’s operations and collections, with complex services upgrades, hazardous material removal, and structural interventions carried out with precision. Key heritage elements, including the building façade and internal architectural features, were preserved and integrated into the design.

This upgrade supports the NGV International’s mission to care for the State Collection and enhances the gallery’s operational capacity for years to come. Through careful planning, technical expertise and collaboration across stakeholders, Arete has delivered a project that combines modern functionality with deep cultural respect.
