arete Australia to revitalise La Trobe University BS1 Nursing & Midwifery building

12th November, 2025

arete Australia has been appointed by La Trobe University to deliver the revitalisation of the BS1 Nursing & Midwifery Building at the Bundoora campus. The project will significantly enhance the facility’s teaching and learning environments while strengthening the building’s structure and services.

The scope of works includes major seismic and structural upgrades, with extensive steel bracing and concrete piling to the perimeter of the four-level building. Upgrades also feature the installation of a new goods lift and precast lift shaft, a new high-voltage electrical kiosk, and the removal and replacement of the rooftop plant and roof structure.

Inside, the project will deliver the expansion and fitout of state-of-the-art nursing simulation suites and associated spaces across Level 2, creating modern training environments for the School of Nursing & Midwifery. Levels 3 and 4 will be prepared as cold shell lab spaces for future fitout, while new amenity areas will replace those removed during the redevelopment to ensure compliance with building codes.

The works also encompass compliance upgrades, including seismic strengthening, as well as improvements to the public realm areas that connect staff and students between buildings and across floors. Infrastructure upgrades include the refurbishment of the electrical kiosk and the addition of a photovoltaic array to the roof, supporting the University’s sustainability goals.

arete Australia is proud to partner with La Trobe University on this important project, delivering a revitalised facility that will enhance the educational experience of nursing and midwifery students while ensuring the long-term resilience of the building.
